TOP 10 MOUNTAIN PASSES YOU 'SHOULD NOT MISS' WHEN CYCLING IN MALAGA REGION

It was not easy to choose 'the best-the most beautiful-the hardest' mountain passes around to have them shown to all mad cyclists coming to punish themselves here is south of Spain, in Andalucía. Finally we have decided to include some nice pieces from Málaga Province only, and those I like really much.

The other like for example Puerto del Sol, La Mina or Muro de Comares, you can find it on web or ask local riders and for sure: these are not worst or less impressive, just we have too many of them around...

Puerto del León / Fuente de la Reina – we are starting with mighty climb directly from Malaga city centre. 16 km long ascent to Puerto del León can be done from both sides: starting in centre straight up or mild version through quarter El Palo and then up through village Olias to get another source of beautiful views over shoreline and deforested part of region called Axarquia.

Climbing directly over A 7000 from centre has few slopes but even some 'Spanish flats parts', it means parts under 4%. From time to time you will get amazing views over Bay of Malaga and shoreline when forest is open. On the top comes so much impression as views over shoreline, N.P. Mountains of Malaga and further range of mountains seems to be from other planet.

Climb from east to Puerto del León is a bit longer, any 20 km. Firstly winding road to Olias will prepare yourself for steep part before you reach T-junction for restaurant Venta Galwey and proper pass. The mentioned Wall of Olias is almost one km long, but views over peak Santopitar could cause you will forget about any suffering. On the top come same amazing views and restaurants to sit down and celebrate your effort.

Puerto del Barco – one of many hidden passes between almost unnamed villages scattered between plenty of peaks around Malaga Province. To tell the truth one from many of my personal Top 10...

Already visible when coming to Villanueva de la Concepcion, at the end of the climb to village take direction for village and pass of the same name Puerto el Barco, later village Villanueva del Cauche. Short descent to valley and pass is ahead of you.

Recently rebuilt asphalt road shows its hardest part since first meters. Hard inclination between olive trees could help you to forgot muscle pain. After 2 km comes easier part of climb until you reach village where is nothing else than nice views around. You will love it!!!

Boquete de Zafarraya – steady climb with impressive views over majestic summit Maroma (2.066 m.a.s.) on the right side and especially proper 'boquete – gap' called Zafarraya. Many times included in Vuelta a España and even Vuelta a Andalucía, last time in February 2017. This pass is appreciated by many cyclists coming to the region during winter to start season and enjoy sunny days close to Africa. Steady 11 km and excellent road with less traffic and still close to shoreline just in the case the weather up there change quickly. Some restaurants are located directly on the pass.

Las Mesas de Villaverde is an old road to medieval settlement Bobastro, later prolonged to the top of the hill when upper deposit of central hydropower station was built. It means that if you feel a bit dead you can stop in the middle of the climb to refresh your mind by observing Mozarabic architecture.

As this hill was part of Vuelta a España in 2016, stage won by Esteban Chavez, thanks to this finally we can enjoy amazing asphalt rebuilt for this event.

Starting in El Chorro, there are 3 km to reach turn for this summit. Since this turn starts proper climb between pines. During the whole 5 km there are ramps over 10% just last kilometre is rewarding the effort with nice outlooks over natural gorge Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, peak El Huma and other impressive pieces around.

Cuesta del Chino – another beautiful and scenic climb. Short but steeper ascent, any 7 km passing through amazing impressive rock formations formed by river Mondron through millions of years.

Recently restored surface give us nice opportunity to ride between summit Pico del Vilo on the right side and composition of few mini-peaks called Pico del Fraile on the left side. Really impressive ascent. There is no word that could describe this cool part of unspoiled countryside behind overpopulated Costa del Sol.

Puerto Martinez – spectacular climb starting already in valley Hoya de Malaga, later winding between huge massifs of Sierra Prieta and Sierra de Alcaparaín.

Any 11 km long climb, at the beginning through open countryside but once you reach village Casarabonela you enter pine forest to spend last 5 km between smelly trees with almost always-present fresh wind.

In generally there are no ramps, and steady inclination makes this ascent really pleasant accompanied by amazing outlooks around. Views form pass over both valleys are sweeter than honey.

+759 m / -56 m | 15.0 km

Mighty N. P. El Torcal, jewel of the region and even destiny for many travellers lacking a bit of karst formation from Mesozoic Era.

Even for all cyclists this hill or rock formation offers big pleasure. Probably the best and most impressive option to reach the top is to start in Antequera city. To come from Malaga it could be too exhausted sometimes, as it is almost 50 km to the top.

15 km long climb offers everything: steady part, steep ramps, middle pass called Boca del Asno, nice asphalt, rough part and even few times more then 15% of gradient. This is the highest point you can reach in Malaga Province. And above all: on the top there are spectacular views, impressive form of rocks and restaurant.

Puerto de la Joya – another jewel, lost between El Chorro and El Torcal. This is probably the reason why there are few cyclist to be seen. But surface, length and gradient make this mountain pass one of the most appreciated by local riders.

Steep ramps between lost farms of goats, steady parts between fields will finally bring you to pass Puerto de la Joya which naturally separate coastal range of mountains Sierra Penibetica from Antequera. Depression formed by river Guadalhorce. Once you do it from east you will never forget.

Alto de la venta la Gloria / Los Núñez – if you prefer stronger but even shorter climbs to test yourself just behind Málaga, this is the best choice for you. Approaching to village Campanillas take direction Almogia and in few kilometres, adequate to warm you up, the hill will come.
The start through hamlet Los Núñez shows the first from couple of ramps included during the ascent. Perfect asphalt makes this hill easier and views around are really pleasant. There is no section over 15% so with a bit of effort in half of hour you can enjoy outlook from summit.
Good hill to start holiday or to do short loop behind Málaga after work.

Puerto del Aire – last pass to be climbed, a bit hidden but amazing and my favourite one. Nice surface, no traffic, nice views and nice percentage. Especially first km is impressive when you see some walls. Average grade is not high but you will get cool parts to warm up during all 8 km.

Start from village Serrato is a bit windy almost all the year, that’s why the name 'Aire – Air'. The whole climb is in the form of stairs, so every kilometre comes short relaxing part. In the middle of ascent you enter pinewoods, so wind and strong sun will be eliminated until you reach the highest point.

Descend to village El Burgo is again in form of stairs with beautiful views over Sierra Prieta and Sierra de las Nieves.
